so, i want an alpaca. i also want honeybees. Mike said no to the alpaca, and NOOOOO to the beehives. so there might be a chance in hell that i can get the alpaca eventually. we know what i can think of my bees. but here is the great part.Yesterday, I was driving down a road near our home, and there were the most adorable twin lambs. I stopped, like a tourist, to take pictures of the sweet things among the full sized herd.
The farmer was at the back of the field “doing chores” i guess. The wife was in the driveway, and I approached her. I was Ballsy, ME. I said “hi, how are you?” she said “well”. I asked, “are those your sweet little lambs out there?” and pointed. She said, “yes they are, thank you.” “I stopped so my daughter could snap some pictures if thats alright.” I said. “oh that’ll be fine.” she answered. I asked, “You raise them for the wool?” “no, we raise them and take them to auction” she replied. (breeding flock, for resale, no end products, i think) “would you be interested in selling the wool?” I asked, going out on a limb because i don’t know how to spin, or prepare for spinning, or what the value of the fleece is. “no, she said, the buyers are all picky, want it done just so, and we don’t have time for that. But we can’t get rid of the fleece unless we do it thier way.” “Oh.” I said, “that’s too bad.” “why would you want it?” she asked. I said “i was born in manhattan and raised nearby, I am a city girl, and I have always wanted to learn to spin.” “Well” she said, “when our shearer comes your welcome to come and get it.” I was overjoyed, my heart happy. “That would be great!” I said, And left her my number. Then I properly introduced myself, (her name is Barbara), told her that I live right up the lane(!?) and that if she’d like, she would not even have to bag the fleece, I am willing to sweat for it. And that she could call me when the shearer was due, and I would come right up and gather the fleece as he removed it, and bring a pie! I am ecstatic. I have prepared myself for a summer of hard work! LOL gotta love us wool addicts. I am so excited, it’s not even funny.
